A masking set for the cockpit windows of the Avro Vulcan B.2 bomber in 1:72 scale deals with the small glazing recessed into the pointed nose. The shapes are pre-cut for the Airfix kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Vulcan is one of the few aircraft on which the ratio between the size of the airframe and the glazing is almost absurd. A model in seventy-second scale takes up half a shelf, but the pilots' windows fit under a fingernail. They are all the harder to mask: the panes are recessed, each is curved differently and the surrounding area runs into the point with not a single straight line. A pre-cut shape for the Airfix kit shortens this part of the work to a few minutes.
The most famous chapter of the type were the attacks on an airfield in the South Atlantic in 1982, carried out from a base in the middle of the ocean. Each of them called for repeated refueling in flight and a whole army of tankers; they were the longest bombing missions in history at the time. Compared with the first series, the B.2 version had a larger wing with a kinked leading edge and stronger engines buried in the roots.
A detail that carries over into the model: the forward pair of crew members sat on ejection seats, while the rest of the crew worked at the back without them and with only side windows. When painting, therefore, do not forget these small windows either. The anti-flash white finish reveals every imperfection, so after taking the pieces off go over the edges and carefully scrape away any bleed with the point of a toothpick.
