Animal sets broaden a modeler's repertoire with something that is hard to find on the shelves. A bear also works differently from a sheep or a dog: it is a large animal that draws attention in a composition at once and determines where the viewer looks first. It is good to allow for that already when laying the scene out.
A coniferous forest, a mountain slope, the bank of a stream or the edge of a clearing all belong here naturally. A composition in which the animal only looks in on the scene while the main action takes place elsewhere, for instance by a vehicle or a log cabin, tends to be more interesting. The set can also be used away from military subjects, for instance in a nature study or on a railway layout in a small scale.
Dark animals easily look like a shapeless silhouette once painted. Layering helps: start with a shade noticeably lighter than the result you want and deepen the coat gradually with a dark glaze. Lighten the back and the crown of the head and leave the legs and the underside of the belly dark. The muzzle and the claws need only be suggested with a thin brush; in a small scale that does the most for credibility.
