What flame dampers are for

The Beaufighter was a heavy twin-engine aircraft that in its day came into its own among other roles as a night fighter. Radial engines, however, belch a clearly visible flame from their exhaust stubs as they run, which in the dark dazzles the pilot and gives the machine away. A flame damper spreads the exhaust gases into a bundle of smaller pipes, where they cool and stop glowing. The characteristic arrangement of the pipes gave this type of damper the popular name hedgehog.

Usage tips

• Wash the castings in lukewarm water with detergent to remove any release agent residue
• Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, as the thin pipes are fragile
• Glue with cyanoacrylate; cement for polystyrene will not join resin
• Carefully deepen the pipe mouths, as it brings out the depth of the detail
• Build the shade from dark metal, rust and soot, and darken the mouths with pigment
