About product

Messerschmitt Bf 109E, Art Scale masking set in 1:72 scale

The Bf 109E masking set from Art Scale is a modeling accessory for a kit. It covers the clear parts while spraying, so that the framing of the cockpit canopy comes out straight and with a sharp paint transition. The designation one-sided in the name means a single-sided set intended for the outer side of the glazing.

The real subject

The Messerschmitt Bf 109 E series, nicknamed Emil, was a single-seat fighter with an inverted V12 Daimler-Benz DB 601 engine with direct fuel injection. It is told apart from the later versions by its squared-off wingtips, the angular framing of the cockpit canopy and the radiator under the fuselage. The E series was built in several subversions that differed in armament and equipment, and it is one of the most frequently modeled types of all. The framing of the canopy on this type is dense and clearly visible, so the overall impression of a finished model rests on the quality of the masking.

How to use the masks

Wash and degrease the clear part so that the mask holds well. Lift the individual parts off the carrier film with tweezers, lay them on the frame and press them down with a soft tool so that the edges seat. On curved sections a small fan-shaped nick or careful trimming with a sharp scalpel right on the part helps, with minimal pressure. Spray in thin coats: the interior shade of the cockpit first, then the base coat and finally the top color. A heavy coat builds a ridge under the edge of the mask that stays visible once it is lifted. Take the mask off as soon as the paint is dry to the touch; with slow-drying enamels, wait longer.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Second World War fighters in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who want straight framing without cutting tape
  • Beginners who have trouble masking a small canopy
  • Airbrush users who require a sharp transition between paint and glass

It is an accessory for a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a masking set for a plastic kit; the model is bought separately.

The shape of the glazing differs only slightly between the subversions, but even so, compare the masks against the clear part of your kit before building.

It is intended for the outer side of the glazing. Double-sided sets have extra parts for the inner side.

The number of masks is stated on the box of the set. The single-sided set is intended for the outer side of the glazing.
