Artwork from the noses of B-29 Superfortresses of the 497th Bombardment Group, which flew against Japan from the Mariana Islands.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Boeing B-29 was in its time the most complicated series produced aircraft in the world. A pressurized cabin let the crew fly at altitudes Japanese fighters reached only with difficulty, the defensive turrets were controlled remotely from sighting stations and the range of the machine allowed for the first time attacks on the Japanese islands from bases two and a half thousand kilometers away. The price for that was endless trouble with overheating of the radial engines.
Both subjects served with the 497th Bombardment Group, which operated from the Mariana Islands within the XXI Bomber Command. The sheet offers aircraft 42-63412 named Peace On Earth of the 870th Squadron and machine 42-24615 with the name Coral Queen of the 869th Squadron. The first of those names is evidence of the bitter humor of the crews: a wish for peace on earth was carried by an aircraft whose job description was to drop bombs.
Lettering and long narrow elements are the most treacherous on the whole sheet. Lift them off the backing along their whole length at once, not by one end, otherwise the film folds over on itself and as a rule can no longer be parted. A more extensive piece of artwork is better settled with a surplus of water and only then nudged into its final position with a damp brush. The fuselage of a Superfortress is smooth and glossy, so the greatest difficulty of smaller models, namely riveting under a motif, falls away here.
A printed sheet with the markings of both aircraft.
