The 1:72 British soldiers in North Africa figures belong to the desert campaign of the years 1940 to 1943. The North African battlefields are popular among modelers precisely because their coloring is unmistakable and a scene can be built with a minimum of terrain elements.
British units committed in Egypt and Libya wore tropical kit: shorts, shirts with rolled-up sleeves and the flat steel helmet, which stayed essentially unchanged from the previous war. The fighting took place in a belt along the coast, where the front between Egypt and Tripolitania shifted back and forth several times over three years. Besieged Tobruk and the autumn battle of El Alamein in 1942 are still among the most frequently built subjects of the whole campaign.
The key is fading. The sun knocked the saturation out of khaki within a few weeks, so the figures suit a lighter and warmer tone than ordinary infantry shades offer. Fine light dust on the footwear and the lower part of the trouser legs evens the contrast against a sandy base and the scene thus holds together. Exposed skin on the arms takes a noticeably warmer cast than on European subjects.
Prepare the sandy base before the figures; it is easier then to match the shade of dust on both.
