National insignia masks Buccaneer S.2C in 1:72 scale from Dead Design make it possible to spray the roundels instead of sticking decals on, so no carrier film is left on the model.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of pre-cut self-adhesive masks for the national insignia. It is not a glazing mask nor a decal sheet: the insignia is not stuck onto a model but sprayed. A modeler sticks the mask onto the finished finish, sprays the color of the insignia through it and takes it off once it has dried. The result is straight away a part of the finish.
A decal stands on a transparent carrier film. That is always somewhat glossier than the flat finish around it and on the surface it is visible as a faint rectangular border, which is called silvering. With a sprayed insignia there is no film, so there is nothing to shine or come away. The paint lies in the same plane as the camouflage, the result will take a flat clear coat and weathering, and the insignia does not act as a sticker.
The base has to be perfectly dried and smooth, otherwise the paint runs under the edge of the mask. Spray the insignia in thin coats and let it go tacky between them. Peel the mask off shortly after the paint has dried, not only after the finish has cured, and pull it back over itself at the sharpest possible angle. In 1:72 scale the insignia are small, so try the position dry first and only then press the mask down.
