Templates for the national insignia and markings for the reconnaissance Mitsubishi C5M1/2 Babs in 1:72 scale from the Dead Design brand. The insignia is sprayed in paint.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of masks for spraying the Japanese national insignia and markings onto the single-engine reconnaissance machine Mitsubishi C5M in the C5M1 and C5M2 versions. Instead of being applied, the insignia is sprayed, so it comes about directly in the paint layer.
The C5M was the naval reconnaissance variant of the fast army communications aircraft Ki-15. The Allies knew it under the name Babs. It was a slim low-wing monoplane with fixed, spatted landing gear and a long glazed cockpit for two men. The Imperial Japanese Navy committed it in the first months of the war in the Pacific to fast reconnaissance, where speed and range counted, not armament. The type had already drawn attention in 1937 with a record flight from Tokyo to London.
In this scale the finished model has a span of barely fifteen centimeters and the insignia on the wing are small. A small decal is in fact harder to settle than a large one: it does not have enough area to be shifted and it breaks over a ripple of the skin or over a wheel spat. Spraying gets around that problem and the edge of the disc stays circular.
Polish the surface under the mask smooth and let the finish mature. Press the edges of the template down with a toothpick, so that paint does not creep under them. Spray at right angles and in several thin coats. Allow more time for the wheel spats and other rounded surfaces, because it is exactly there that a mask most easily stands away.
