About product

Photo-etched seat belts of American pattern, the Cold War period, 1:72 scale

The set contains photo-etched seat belts for the pilot, an aftermarket accessory for the cockpit: it is not a model of an aircraft. Yahu Models supplies them with the color printing finished, so there is no painting of the straps, the buckles or the fittings. In 1:72 scale kits either only suggest the belts in the plastic or leave them out altogether, and yet it is the belts that make an empty ejection seat convincing. The set is designed for American types of the Cold War period, that is for jet machines with an ejection seat.

What the set is for

A seat belt in a cockpit is one of the few elements that can be seen even through a closed canopy. American systems of this period combined shoulder straps, a lap belt and leg restraints to the seat, and the colors of the straps and the buckles differed with the era and the type of seat. The photo-etched version has, unlike plastic, genuine thinness and can be bent into a natural sag: draped over the edge of the seat or hanging loose over the side of the cockpit, it looks far better than a stiff plastic molding.

Usage tips

Separate the belts from the sheet with a scalpel, not by tearing. To shape them, use a round stick or the handle of a pair of tweezers and bend the metal gradually, not in a sharp crease. They are glued in spots with thin super glue; apply the drop with a pin, so that the glue does not get onto the printing. If you want a softer look of fabric, the back of the belt can be backed with a thin layer of white glue or gel super glue, which holds the shape. Paint the seat and the cockpit before you fit the belts. Do not throw the rest of the sheet away; keep it in a resealable bag together with the paper guide, as the metal offcuts can be used on other models.

Who the set is for

  • For builders of American jet aircraft of the Cold War period in 1:72 scale
  • For modelers whose kit has no belts or only suggests them
  • For models with an open canopy, where the seat is clearly visible
  • As a quick refinement of the cockpit without buying a whole interior set

This is an accessory for the cockpit. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

The set is designed generally for American machines of the Cold War period. It does not name a particular type of aircraft, so it is best to compare the shape of the belts with the documentation for your own cockpit.

It is a sheet of photo-etched belts for a cockpit in 1:72 scale. The number of pieces on the sheet is given on the packaging of the set.

Bend them gradually over a rounded object and let them hang loose over the edge of the seat. A sharp crease gives the metal away, while a smooth sag imitates fabric.

An acrylic varnish applied in spots does the printing no harm, but aggressive solvent varnishes can attack the colors. Overspraying the whole part is not advisable.
