A photo-etched set of seat belts in 1:72 scale from the Polish maker Yahu Models, matching the cockpit equipment of the Soviet Air Force in the postwar decades. It is not a model of an aircraft but a cockpit accessory. The belts are etched from thin steel sheet and are supplied pre-painted: you only have to shape them and set them in place. The color print takes in the small fittings as well, so painting parts a few millimeters in size falls away.
Compared with the machines of the Second World War, postwar jet aircraft have a tighter and better visible cockpit, often with an ejection seat. A seat of bare plastic therefore looks unfinished, especially under a slid-back canopy or on a model displayed with the cockpit open. Seat belts are the quickest way to give the interior scale and credibility. The set is conceived generally for the Soviet types of the Cold War, that is for the fighter and the attack machines of that era, and is not tied to a single particular aircraft.
Separate the parts with a scalpel or with photo-etch shears on a firm surface; breaking them out deforms the fret. Shape them with tweezers with smooth jaws and a bending tool, or over the edge of a steel ruler, and avoid repeated bending in the same place. Glue with cyanoacrylate applied in a minimal amount with a pin, or with a glue for photo-etched parts; plastic cement does not hold on metal. On an ejection seat the belts run over the shoulders as well as over the lap: let them hang freely and slightly waved. The shade can be evened out with a light wash; full repainting would needlessly cover the print.
The set is an accessory to a model, not a kit of an aircraft. The basic model, the glue and the paints are not included in the package.
