A plastic kit of the German Leopard 1A5 main battle tank from Zvezda in 1:100 scale. It is a typical representative of the small tabletop scales: the parts are cleverly laid out and, according to the manufacturer, the model can be assembled even without glue (snap-fit), while the road wheels are molded together with the tracks, which speeds the build up considerably. In the box you will find sprues of injection-molded plastic, instructions and a small decal sheet. The small scale makes the model an ideal addition to a collection and a rewarding piece for a desk or a display case where there is little room.
The Leopard 1 was a postwar German tank built on a philosophy of mobility and firepower at the expense of heavy armor, armed with the proven 105 mm gun. The 1A5 version is a late modernization: above all it brought a new fire control system with a thermal sight, which made fighting at night and in poor visibility possible, and the ability to use modern sub-caliber ammunition. Leopard 1A5s served with the Bundeswehr and with a number of other armies, which received them through export and subsequent resale.
Even though the kit is snap-fit, we recommend securing the joints with a drop of liquid cement for plastic; the model then holds better and stands up to handling. Finish and paint the running gear and the hull before you glue the turret on. A thin coat of primer is enough on a small model; lay the paint on in fine coats so that the relief does not clog. The classic three-color NATO camouflage (green, brown, black) looks better in this scale with soft but not overly blurred transitions. Bring the detail out with a dark wash into the recesses and the latches, and use dust and mud pigments on the tracks and the lower hull, as weathering does most of the work in a small scale.
