A concrete bench with a wooden seat is a typical piece of street furniture that can be set into a scene practically regardless of the period. In a park, on a village green, by a bus stop or in front of an apartment block it works as a quiet element that fills an empty area and at the same time gives the viewer a clear clue about the scale of the scene. In 1:72 it is a small stand-alone object of the setting, not a kit and not a part for another model.
It comes into its own best in town and park dioramas, at a station, on a housing estate or in front of a public building. A bench is also a rewarding place for a figure: a seated person turns a static scene into an event at once. It also looks good overturned or damaged in scenes of a derelict setting.
Wash the part in lukewarm soapy water and let it dry, and clean up the residue from production with a sanding sponge. Do not paint concrete a uniform gray — lay down a mid-gray base and lighten and darken the surfaces irregularly, so that a marbled texture appears. A wash in brown-gray will bring out the edges and corners, and a fine pigment at the foot will join the bench to the terrain. Set the wooden parts apart in a warm brown and pick the texture out with a dry brush. A little moss or lichen made from static grass on the lower edge will sell the scene.
Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
