Landing gear bay masks for the Douglas A-1H/J Skyraider in 1:72 scale from Dead Design cover the inside of the bays, so that they are not fouled by the color of the airframe while the top varnish is sprayed.
Responsibility details are not available.
Pre-cut self-adhesive masks for the inside of the landing gear bays. On the real aircraft a bay usually has a different shade from the outer surface of the airframe, and on a model it is therefore painted in a separate step. The mask closes it off for that time, so the top camouflage does not foul the sprayed interior of the bay and the edges stay crisp.
The Douglas A-1 Skyraider was a single-seat piston-engine attack aircraft with a Wright radial engine, designed to carry a heavy load on its pylons and to loiter long over the battlefield. The A-1H and A-1J versions are among the single-seat forms. The main landing gear retracts into the wing, so the bays are clearly visible from below on a model.
The procedure is the opposite of what it seems: the inside of the bay is sprayed first, not the airframe. Let the interior shade dry properly, or seal it with matte varnish, and only then insert the mask. The film is put into the opening with tweezers and visibility in the depth of the part is poor, so light it from the side and press the edges down with the point of a toothpick, so that no edge is left lifted anywhere. When spraying the top varnish, guide the airbrush perpendicular to the lower surface; an angled coat drives the paint under the edge of the mask exactly where it is hardest to repair. Once it has dried, pull the mask out with tweezers, while the varnish is only set.
