A pitot tube is an airspeed sensor – a slender tube set against the airflow, from which the speed of the aircraft is derived. In 1:72 scale it is a part at the limit of what an injection mold can do: to be cast and released at all it has to be disproportionately thick, it tends to be tapered and it is rarely straight – and because it sticks out of the model, it is usually the first thing to break off during handling. Turned brass turns that around: the part is thin, perfectly true and strong enough to survive the build and the display case. The model ends up with detail that looks like a real metal tube, even under a magnifier.
The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter earned the nickname of a missile with a man in it entirely deservedly. It was built around a single idea – to get as high as possible as fast as possible. It had an extremely short, thin and sharp wing with a leading edge so sharp that it had to be covered on the ground so the crew did not injure their hands on it, a long slender fuselage and a powerful jet engine. The result was a supersonic interceptor with an astonishing rate of climb, but also with the reputation of a machine that forgives the pilot nothing. It served in many countries in the fighter and attack roles.
