A masking set for the carrier-based F-35C Lightning II in 1:72 scale, intended for the kit of the Tamiya brand.
Responsibility details are not available.
The letter C at the end of the designation means a ship's deck on the F-35 family. The version for the US Navy has a markedly larger wing with folding tips compared with the land-based A, strengthened landing gear and an arrestor hook, because every landing on a deck is a controlled impact. The greater lifting surface at the same time brought it a longer range, which made it the machine with the greatest reach in the whole family.
Framing a cabin is among the most thankless operations of a whole build. On an aircraft of this shape the frames are narrow, curved and asymmetrical, so tape is cut by hand differently every time and the line under it wanders. Parts cut out in advance from masking paper follow the shape of a particular kit, are offered up to the glass and pressed down. The paper can be shaped into a curve without crumpling and leaves no adhesive behind once removed.
Degrease the glass before masking and let it dry completely. Lift the parts off with tweezers and press down mainly the edges by the frame, as that is where paint most often runs under. Spray thinly and in several coats, and take them off before the varnish has cured completely. Wipe off any remaining adhesive with a swab lightly dampened in spirit, never with an acrylic thinner. It pays to look the finished joint of frame and glass over against the light, as a small overlap is harder to paint over than a thin missing line.
