1:48 MiG 3 control surfaces (ICM and ALANGER kit)

Resin control surfaces for the MiG-3 model in 1:48 scale are an accessory set for a plastic kit you have already bought, not an airplane model of its own. They replace the rudder and ailerons, which in the kit are cast in one piece with the tail surfaces and the wing.

About product

MiG-3 control surfaces in 1:48 scale from Brengun

The accessory is intended for a modeler who already has a plastic kit of the Soviet MiG-3 fighter in 1:48 scale and wants to give it a livelier look. The set is cast in resin and is cut for the ICM or Alanger kit. On its own it does not make up a model and it cannot be built without the base kit.

Why resin instead of the plastic from the kit

Injected plastic has to respect the parting planes of the mold, and that is why the rudder and the ailerons tend to be cast as one piece with the fixed part of the surface. A resin casting does not have that limitation: the parting gaps are thinner and sharper and the surface captures the texture of the skin more faithfully. Because the surfaces are separate, you can set them in the neutral position during the build, or deflect them slightly, as an aircraft looked when parked on the ground. Deflected surfaces are exactly the detail everyone notices on a finished model.

Tips for working it

First wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry completely, so that no mold release agent is left on the surface. Cut the casting blocks off with a modeling saw, not with nippers. Sand wet and with respiratory protection, as resin dust is fine and irritating. On the kit, cut the original surfaces off with a sharp knife or a saw and level the edge properly. Try the contact faces dry first and glue only then with super glue, or with a thicker type of super glue that gives you time to fine-tune the position. Before painting, fill any gaps with putty and spray the whole part with primer so that the paint holds.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who build the MiG-3 in 1:48 scale and want to go beyond the contents of the box.
  • Those who want the rudder and ailerons deflected rather than merged with the surface.
  • Anyone interested in working with resin, which calls for super glue and a little sanding.
  • Builders of dioramas where the model is parked on the ground.

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is an accessory set for a plastic MiG-3 kit in 1:48 scale, which you have to have obtained separately.

Super glue on a cyanoacrylate base. Ordinary cement for plastic does not dissolve resin and will not hold.

Yes. Wash them in lukewarm soapy water to remove the mold release agent, let them dry and only then cut off the casting blocks.

The set is among the simpler resin accessories, but the original surfaces have to be cut off the kit and the edges leveled. A little experience of cutting and sanding comes in handy.
