A set of stencils for the cockpit frames of a model of the Vought F-8E Crusader fighter, 1:72 scale. Prepared for spraying with an airbrush.
Responsibility details are not available.
The shapes on the sheet match the glazing of the Vought F-8E Crusader fighter. On this aircraft the canopy slides back and has a fairly fine division, so in a build with the cockpit open the inner side of the frames is visible just as well as the outer one. That is precisely where a line drawn by hand tends to be the least accurate, and precisely where finished work is most often judged.
The letter E denotes the most produced version of the Crusader for the US Navy. It received a more capable onboard radar in a lengthened nose and a fuselage spine for the electronics of the Bullpup missiles. Pylons were added under the wing, so the interceptor became a machine usable against ground targets as well. In French naval aviation a related version served until the end of the 1990s and those were the last Crusaders in operational service in the world. Collectors therefore have a choice of naval schemes from Southeast Asia as well as markedly different European examples.
Wash the clear parts before masking and let them dry off perfectly; grease from fingers is the greatest enemy of adhesion. Lead the paint square to the frame, never at a slant under the edge of a shape. Uncover at the moment the finish has set; a fully cured film likes to tear at an edge and takes a piece of paint with it.
