A set of pre-cut masks, 1:72 F1M Pete - Japanese national insignia, from Dead Design for spraying the hinomaru instead of using decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is not a kit but an accessory for a finished model. The set contains pre-cut self-adhesive masks of the Japanese national insignia, through which the hinomaru is sprayed with paint directly onto the surface of the model. The Mitsubishi F1M, listed by the Allies under the code name Pete, was a single-engine floatplane biplane of the Imperial Japanese Navy. It was launched from the catapults of surface ships and was used for observation, for patrolling over convoys and for light attack duties.
Why spray the insignia through a mask
A sprayed insignia is part of the paint layer. It has no glossy edge, forms no step and does not silver, so a gloss varnish under a decal and a softener both fall away. On a biplane it is practical for another reason too: the insignia are often laid on wing covering with raised ribs, where a decal holds badly and tears as it is tapped down.
Let the coat cure thoroughly. Place the mask according to the color scheme drawing, press the edges down all the way around and smooth the transition with a toothpick. Spray the paint in several thin coats perpendicular to the edge of the mask, so that it cannot creep under it. Lift the mask off while the paint is fresh, pulling at a low angle to the surface.
