About product

General Aviation Ga-43 Clark in the Swissair version, 1:72

This injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale captures one of the less usual airliners of the 1930s. The boxing is aimed at a machine operated by the Swiss carrier, which determines above all the color scheme and the markings. It is short-run production, so the parts have somewhat more pronounced sprue stubs and the joints guide less than on mass-produced kits - but the finished model rewards you with a subject you will not find every day. The exact contents of the package, the number of parts and the number of color schemes are given in the instructions supplied with the kit.

The real subject

The General Aviation Ga-43, also known by its designer's name as the Clark Ga-43, was an American single-engine all-metal airliner with a low wing, retractable landing gear and an enclosed cabin for fewer than ten passengers. It appeared at the beginning of the 1930s and technically belonged to the generation moving from wooden and mixed structures to all-metal cantilever airframes. Very few were built, which makes their operating history all the more interesting - individual machines reached carriers in North America and in Europe, among them a Swiss operator whose colors this boxing captures.

Building and painting tips

With a short-run kit it pays to try every part dry first and sand it to fit if need be - accurate seating is not a given. Cut the sprue stubs off and sand them with fine paper, then fill and sand the seams. Glue with thin plastic cement run into the seam by capillary action; it holds more firmly and does not clog the surface. Apply a primer before painting, which will also reveal any remaining scratches. An all-metal airframe with a polished or light finish is rewarding for metallic shades, but those call for a truly smooth base, so do not underestimate the sanding. Apply the decals onto a gloss clear coat and finish with a matte or semi-matte overcoat according to the nature of the scheme.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of civil airliners of the 1930s in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who like unusual and rarely covered subjects
  • Builders with experience of short-run kits
  • Anyone interested in the European operating history of American designs

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The exact number of parts is given in the instructions supplied with the kit. It is an injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale.

Rather not. Short-run kits call for trying the parts dry, sanding and filling. For a modeler with a few kits behind them it is manageable, though.

The boxing is tied to a particular carrier, so the matching markings come as standard with releases of this kind. The number of schemes and their extent is given in the instructions in the box.

Thin plastic cement run into the seam by capillary action. For the small accessories and any metal parts, cyanoacrylate glue.
