About product

M36B1 Gun Motor Carriage 90 mm in 1:72 scale (UM)

The kit captures the American M36B1 tank destroyer, armed with a 90 mm gun in an open rotating turret. It is an injection-molded plastic model in the small 1:72 scale, supplied unassembled and unpainted. The exact contents of the package and the number of parts are given by the instructions for the kit; check the sprues and the instructions after unpacking.

The real subject

The M36B1 came about by combining the turret of the M36 tank destroyer with the hull of the M4A3 medium tank. The reason was a shortage of standard chassis at a time when the numbers of vehicles able to deliver 90 mm gun fire at longer range had to be made up quickly. Thanks to the medium tank hull the vehicle kept a fully armored lower body with a bow machine gun, but the turret stayed open at the top, as was usual in this category of equipment. It was built in limited numbers during 1944 and was deployed in the closing phase of the fighting in Western Europe.

Building and painting tips

In 1:72 scale clean joints are decisive. Use thin cement for plastic, which is drawn into the seam by capillary action, and try the parts dry first. Finish and paint the running gear and the interior of the open turret before you close the assembly up, otherwise you will not get to them again. Apply a primer before painting; it unifies the surface and reveals any remaining seams. Spray the base shade with an airbrush; a brush is enough for the small details. The open turret deserves a darker wash to bring out the rivets and edges, and dust and mud pigments suit the running gear and the lower hull. Apply a gloss clear coat under the decals and flatten the whole thing again once it is dry.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers with experience of the small 1:72 scale
  • Collectors of American armored subjects of the Second World War
  • Diorama builders who need several vehicles in a small area
  • Anyone interested in less usual variants of tank destroyers

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is a conventional plastic kit that you assemble and paint yourself. Glue and paints are not included in the package.

The turret with the 90 mm gun is the same; the difference is underneath: the M36B1 carries it on the hull of the M4A3 medium tank instead of the standard tank destroyer chassis.

You will find the number of parts and the contents of the package in the instructions supplied with the kit.

The small 1:72 scale calls for patience when working the small parts. For an absolute newcomer it is demanding; for a modeler with a few completed kits it is ideal.
