An injection-molded plastic kit of the single-engine Heinkel He 162 Salamander jet fighter in the A-9 version in 1:72 scale. The boxing is listed with the markings of the JG 300 unit. It is released by AZ model, a Czech maker that has long devoted itself to the less usual versions of aircraft of the Second World War and the postwar period. The model is built and painted with ordinary modeling methods.
The He 162 was an exceptionally simple single-seat jet fighter of the end of the Second World War. Its recognition features are the jet engine mounted on top of the fuselage behind the cockpit, twin vertical tails at the tips of the horizontal tail and the extensive use of wood and glued parts because of the shortage of aluminum. The pilot sat in an ejection seat, which was a novelty for its day. The aircraft was created to an extremely short deadline, was demanding to fly and its combat service remained very limited. The A-9 version is among the late variants of the A series.
In 1:72 scale this is a small model where clean work decides everything. The cockpit is built and painted before the fuselage is closed up, because afterwards there is no access to it. Before painting it pays to mask the canopy and spray on a filler primer, which reveals the seams left by gluing. The engine mounted above the fuselage and its nacelle are the visual focus, so give the joints around it more time with the abrasive. Lay the decals onto a gloss base and, once dry, unify with a matte overcoat. A fine wash will bring out the panel lines.
