Cut pieces for the glazing frames of the Swedish Draken in 1:72 scale. Prepared for the canopy shape from Hasegawa's mold.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Saab J 35 Draken was the first European production aircraft to exceed twice the speed of sound in ordinary service. Behind its unmistakable outline stands the double delta: the inner part of the wing has a very sharp sweep angle and carries the fuel and the landing gear, the outer part is gentler and takes care of controllability at low speeds. Sweden needed a machine that could manage a takeoff from a straight stretch of road and maintenance by conscripts, and the Draken was subordinated to that from the first drawing.
The first flight took place in 1955 and its service stretched across the whole Cold War. Besides the home air force it was used by Denmark, Finland and Austria, whose machines flew for a long time with cannon armament only, because of the State Treaty. The last Austrian examples retired only in 2005.
Inside you will find pre-cut shapes for the glazing, thanks to which the frames arise by spraying instead of by brush. In a small scale that is a difference visible at once, because a hand-painted line tends to be thicker than the frame is in reality.
Small pieces are best transferred with the point of a toothpick lightly moistened with water. With shapes a few millimeters in size, tweezers often cause the film to spring away and get lost in the carpet. Once laid on, press the piece down with a dry cotton swab and check whether the edge is standing above the surface anywhere. Keep the offcuts left over from the sheet: they will serve as improvised masking for small openings, landing gear pins or the rear of the exhaust nozzle during final varnishing.
