An injection-molded plastic kit of the two-seat Mitsubishi F-2B airplane in 1:72 scale from the Japanese manufacturer FineMolds. The two-seat version differs from the single-seat one in its tandem cockpit and in the related changes to the spine of the fuselage, so it is a standard of its own and not a single-seat machine with a different canopy. A scale of 1:72 keeps the model at a compact size suitable for a display case.
The Mitsubishi F-2 was created as a Japanese multirole airplane derived from the American F-16 in joint development by a Japanese and an American manufacturer. Compared with the starting type it received a substantially larger wing with a high proportion of composite materials, a modified fuselage and its own onboard equipment. It is powered by one afterburning turbofan engine. The F-2B version is two-seat, with a second crew member behind the pilot; it serves above all for training while keeping the combat capabilities of the type. It is precisely the tandem cockpit that makes the F-2B a rewarding build, because the interior is more visible on a finished model than on the single-seat version.
Finish, paint and shade both cockpits before closing up the fuselage, because on the two-seat version they are clearly visible through the glazing. Keep the instrument panels and the seats a shade darker, so that the detail does not vanish in a small scale, and apply light highlights sparingly. Consider nose weight before you glue the fuselage together. Mask the glazing rather with tape cut to size than with a liquid mask, because a straight edge of the frames holds better on a long canopy. Take the seams on the fuselage and the leading edges down by sanding and restore any lost engraving. Spray the camouflage scheme from the lighter shade to the darker one, apply the decals over gloss varnish and finally unify the surface with a matte or satin varnish.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
