An injection-molded plastic kit of the Type 03 medium-range ground-based surface-to-air missile system as used by the Japanese ground forces. The 1:72 scale is a rewarding one for modern wheeled vehicles: the model takes up a reasonable amount of room in a display case and yet carries the engraved detail of the chassis and of the launcher. The maker is the Japanese firm Aoshima, and the kit is meant to be glued and painted.
The Type 03 is a Japanese mobile medium-range surface-to-air missile system brought into service in 2003. It is conceived as a set of vehicles on heavy wheeled chassis with good cross-country ability, so that it can be moved quickly both on the road and off it. The launcher carries canisters with guided missiles and rises into an inclined position when firing, with the vehicle resting on extending stabilizing outriggers. The whole concept is subordinated to deploying and packing up the set quickly.
With a model of this type the weight of the work lies in the chassis and the wheels. Glue the axles on a flat surface, and before the glue sets, stand the model on glass and check that every wheel touches the surface, otherwise the finished piece will visibly limp. Paint the tires separately from the hubs, and rather tone the matte black with a drop of gray so that it is not just a dark hole. Rims and hubs are covered best with a circular mask or by careful brushwork once the base color has dried. Finally, dust the chassis and the undersides of the fenders with pigment so that the model does not look freshly washed.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
