About product

Avro Lancaster Mk.I and Mk.III 1:72 - a photo-etched interior set (Eduard)

On a large bomber in 1:72 scale the interior is a rewarding area: through the cockpit glazing and the open hatches more is visible than a first-time builder would expect. This photo-etched set from the Czech maker Eduard adds features to the inside of the fuselage that a plastic mold can only manage as shallow relief - instrument panels, consoles, small levers, stiffeners and harness belts. Because the set covers both the Mk.I and the Mk.III, it suits the most widespread forms of the Lancaster.

The real subject

The Avro Lancaster was a British four-engine heavy bomber that came about by reworking the unsuccessful twin-engine Manchester. The seven-man crew worked in a narrow fuselage with a prominent spar beam in the middle, over which they climbed from the cockpit to the rear. The Mk.I used Rolls-Royce Merlin engines of British manufacture and the Mk.III the same engines from licensed production by Packard in the United States; the aircraft were otherwise identical in design, which is why one interior set can be used for both.

Tips for working with photo-etched parts

Fit the interior parts onto the plastic before you close the fuselage - working on them later tends to be impossible. The original molded relief on the plastic usually has to be sanded flat first, otherwise the photo-etched part will not seat and will stand away. Glue small parts with a spot of gel cyanoacrylate applied with a toothpick, and larger areas with a thin layer. Paint the parts that are not color printed over a primer; printed parts, on the other hand, should not be painted, and once the glue has cured a matte varnish is enough. It pays to bring the interior out with a dark wash and a dry brush, otherwise it blends together deep inside the fuselage.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of British bombers who want the interior showing through to be up to standard
  • Modelers in 1:72 used to working with tweezers and a scalpel
  • Those who build a model with open hatches or an uncovered cockpit
  • Collectors who are bothered by an empty interior under the glazing

This is an accessory, not a complete model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The two versions differed mainly in the origin of the Merlin engines, British against licensed American ones. The interior stayed practically identical, so the set covers both.

Before the fuselage halves are glued together. Once it is closed you can no longer reach most of the interior areas.

The parts without color printing yes, over a primer. Any color printed parts are not repainted, only evened out with a matte varnish.

No. Photo-etched sets are designed for a particular kit, so before buying check that it matches the model you are building.
