The Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II is a single-engine multirole aircraft with a reduced radar signature. The letter A denotes the version with conventional takeoff and landing. It carries its armament in internal bays so that the shape of the airframe stays clean, and it is the only one of the versions with a gun built directly into the airframe. Japan is among the operators of this version.
A plastic kit in 1:72 scale, supplied unassembled and unpainted. The finished model measures around 22 centimeters in length and around 15 centimeters across. The box is listed as the Japanese version; the contents of the decal sheet and the finishes offered are given in the manufacturer's instructions. The size of the finished model suits an ordinary aircraft display case, where it stands comfortably beside older fighters of the same scale.
A uniform gray airframe reads flat, so spray it panel by panel and vary the shade slightly, so the surfaces do not go dead. Mask the cockpit glazing before spraying and remove the tape only once the last coat has dried. Paint the internal weapons bays and the landing gear bays before you close them. Apply the decals over a gloss base and finally unify the surface with a semi-gloss varnish, because on an aircraft with a reduced signature an overdone shine looks out of place.
The kit is aimed at collectors of modern combat aircraft and at modelers who want a Japanese machine in the usual aircraft scale for their display case. Thanks to the low number of external stores the build is fairly straightforward. Paints, glue and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
