The VF-19 range follows on from the YF-19 test machine that viewers know from Macross Plus. It is a so-called Valkyrie, a combat aircraft that can change into the form of a humanoid robot. This set captures precisely that second state, Battroid in the terminology of the series: the fuselage straightens up, the wings fold back and the machine stands on two legs.
The letters EF/A set apart a later reworking of the base type, with which the machine appeared in the feature film Macross Frontier: The Wings of Farewell. The Isamu Special epithet points to a personal finish named after the pilot whose name has accompanied the saga ever since the first test flights of the nineteen series. The finish is therefore the main thing that separates this item from otherwise related variants of the same machine.
The Japanese maker supplies the same heroes in two separate sets: once as an aircraft, once as a robot. Neither of them converts, and that is precisely why the shapes come out more sharply and the seams between the parts are narrower than a joint mechanism would allow. The robot form has a higher number of parts, joint assemblies and a support stand than the aircraft version of the same pilot.
It suits a collector who wants both forms of one machine side by side, and a modeler with a taste for mecha design as well. The build calls for careful sanding of the mold parting lines on the limbs, because it is there that a robot silhouette is most on view.
