The kit treats one of the largest flying boats ever to reach series production, specifically the aircraft known by its own name Hawaii Mars. In 1:72 scale it is an exceptionally large model for which it pays to think out in advance not only the space in the display case but also the way of attaching it to a stand. Amodel builds on short-run production, so it offers subjects that mainstream kits do not cover, at the cost of a more demanding assembly.
The Mars type was an American four-engine flying boat built as a long-range naval transport aircraft. Only a few were completed and each of them was given its own name; Hawaii Mars was one of them. After their naval service ended, some of these aircraft were given a second life in the civil role of water bombers, scooping water straight off the surface and dropping it on forest fires. It is precisely this unusually long and varied career that makes the type a rewarding subject for a large display case.
Begin with a thorough dry fit, especially of the fuselage and of the wing seating. Glue the long fuselage halves in stages and reinforce the joints from the inside so that the fuselage does not twist. Try the engine nacelles and their attachment dry before painting, because on a four-engine aircraft any inaccuracy in the angle shows at once. Count on filling and sanding the joints; on the hull of a flying boat they are the most visible of all. Use a primer before painting, spray the large areas with an airbrush and apply a gloss intermediate coat before the decals. The underwater part of the hull and the leading edges will take light weathering.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
