About product

Martin PBM-5A Mariner 1:72, Big Ed from Eduard

The Big Ed range means one thing: the key accessories for a given machine brought together in one box. The package for the Mariner in 1:72 scale combines several photo-etched sets with painting masks, so it covers the crew cabin and the exterior areas of this sizeable flying boat in a single purchase. Do not look for the aircraft itself in the carton, however; this is an accessory set.

What the set is for

The PBM-5A was the amphibian conclusion to the development of the Mariner, the US Navy patrol flying boat with its gull wing and distinctive tail surfaces set in a V. The postwar variant was given retractable landing gear and served among other duties with rescue units. The Eduard accessories lift the injection-molded kit of this giant to display standard: a finer deck, convincing bays and clean frames for the extensive glazing.

Work tips

On a large model, divide the work into sections and fit the photo-etched parts as you go, not onto a finished fuselage. Put the cabin masks on while the fuselage is still easy to handle, that is, before the wing is assembled. Keep the smallest components of the frets in a closeable box; they vanish into the carpet with legendary reliability.

Who it is for

  • builders of American naval flying boats
  • modelers who want all the detailing at once
  • advanced users of photo-etch in 1:72 scale
  • anyone who prefers a complete package to separate items
