Self-adhesive cut masks for the model of the tailless carrier-based jet airplane in 1:72 scale. The EXPERT designation means an extended extent of the set: compared with the basic version it holds more masking elements. The set is not a kit, it is an aid for painting.

A small scale makes the greatest demands

In 1:72 scale the frames of the glazing are only a few tenths of a millimeter wide. Tape cut by hand at this size practically does not hold its shape, the edges come out jagged and the frame is often plainly of uneven thickness. A machine-cut mask gets around this problem — the width is constant along the whole length and the shape matches a particular clear part, so that the result looks convincing even under a magnifier.

Tips for working with fine parts

For masks as small as these use sharp tweezers with smooth jaws, so that the film does not wrinkle. Before applying them, wash the glazing in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and let it dry — grease from fingers is the commonest reason why a fine mask does not hold. Lay the paint on really thinly; on narrow frames even a misting is enough, and a heavier coat would round the edge off. Once the masks are applied it is a good idea to cover the rest of the glazing with masking fluid or tape, so that it is not dusted by overspray.
