A specialized decal sheet in 1:72 scale holding technical stencils, that is the small maintenance and warning markings spread over the airframe of the real aircraft. It matters to know what this product is and is not: it is not a set of national insignia or of personal markings of particular machines, but an accessory used alongside them. The package holds the sheet and instructions with the placement; a plastic model is not part of it.
A model built with nothing but large national insignia looks empty. Small markings, by contrast, give the surface scale and credibility — the eye reads them as proof that this is a real machine, even though the individual texts cannot be read from a distance. On a type with a movable wing such as the MiG-23 the markings are moreover concentrated around the pivoting parts, the air intakes and the access covers, so they help emphasize how broken up the airframe is.
The MiG-23 was a single-engine combat aircraft with a variable-geometry wing that was set to several positions in flight according to speed. The type was produced in large numbers and served with a number of states, including Czechoslovakia. It existed in several versions that differed in equipment and in the shape of the nose, which is reflected in the placement of the markings on the airframe too — before applying them it is therefore worth comparing the instructions with documentation for the particular version.
The markings are very small, so set aside a session of their own and good light for them. Trim them as close as you can, or the neighboring markings will come along with them. Soak them briefly, one at a time, and move them onto the model with a damp brush. The base has to be glossy, otherwise even a small decal will silver. Use the softener carefully and only where a marking runs over engraving or a curve — too aggressive a solution will blur small text. Once dry, varnish over the area and only then spray the final matte or semi-gloss coat.
The package holds only the decals. The model, paints and glue are not part of it.
