Pre-cut New Ware kabuki masks for the model of the MiG-25PD interceptor in 1:72 scale. It is not a kit and not parts of a model — the package holds self-adhesive masks only, which replace cutting tape with a scalpel and measuring the glazing frames. In 1:72 that saving is especially welcome: the frames here are so narrow that cutting them by hand ends in a crooked edge more often than in a clean result. Kabuki tape is thin, paper-based and pliable, follows the rounded surfaces of the canopy, holds on an edge and leaves no adhesive behind. The ADVANCED designation places the set in the middle standard of the maker's three-step range (BASIC, ADVANCED, EXPERT), which differ in the extent of the areas covered; the exact list of parts is given in the instructions in the package.
The MiG-25 is a twin-engine single-seat aircraft designed for high-speed flight at great altitude. So that the airframe would stand up to the thermal load, a substantial part of the structure was made of steel instead of the usual light alloys — which is one reason it is among the heaviest aircraft in its category. Characteristic features are the rectangular side air intakes and the pair of vertical tail surfaces. The PD version is a modernized interceptor standard with revised equipment in the nose. The cockpit is fairly small, with heavily divided glazing — in 1:72, then, this is fine but highly visible work.
Wash the glazing in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap first and let it dry freely. Transfer the masks with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, seat them dry and press the edges down with a blunt tool. In a small scale it is essential to spray really thin coats — a heavy coat leaves a step at the edge of the mask that in 1:72 visually thickens the whole frame. The proven order is the interior shade, then the primer and the top shade last. Take the masks off shortly after the paint has flashed off, pulling them back over themselves at a sharp angle.
The package contains masks only. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
