The N1K1-Ja Shiden Model 11 Ko is a kit of the Japanese Kawanishi fighter in 1:72 scale from the manufacturer Aoshima.

The kit captures the land-based Kawanishi N1K1-J Shiden fighter aircraft in the Model 11 Ko version, that is, in the configuration also designated as the N1K1-Ja. The Japanese designation Ko corresponds to the first character in the traditional series and is transcribed in the Latin alphabet as a, so the two designations in the name complement each other and point to one and the same version. The 1:72 scale is practical for a collection of Japanese fighters, as the model takes up little space and is easily supplemented with further types.
The Shiden came about by an unusual route. It developed from the Kawanishi Kyofu floatplane fighter, which showed in the layout of the airframe, especially in the mid-mounted wing and in the unusually long telescopic landing gear, which had to overcome the large diameter of the propeller. It was powered by the powerful Nakajima Homare eighteen-cylinder radial, and the aircraft became known for its automatic combat flaps, which improved its agility in a turn. The Allies assigned it the code name George. The Model 11 Ko version carried four twenty-millimeter cannons, with two of them remaining in gondolas under the wing. The Shiden was among the best Japanese fighters of the end of the war, but its deployment was complicated by production quality and engine unreliability.
In 1:72 scale the cleanliness of the small parts decides, so cut the landing gear legs and the cannon gondolas off carefully and sand the sprue marks down thoroughly. The radial engine will stand out with a dark wash and a dry brush. Japanese naval schemes with a dark green upper surface and a light underside look best when you spray the green in several thin coats and wear it slightly on the leading edges and at the wing root, where the crew climbed. Apply a gloss surface before the decals.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
