Templates for covering the cockpit of the twin-engine Nakajima J1N Gekko from the Revell and Takara kits while spraying. The frames thus get the color of the airframe, the transparent areas stay free of any application and the boundary between them is sharp.
The Gekko carries a long greenhouse canopy that starts at the windscreen and stretches past the pilot station to the rear. There are many frames, they are narrow and some of them break into a curve. Cutting strips of tape by hand on glazing like that takes more time than all the rest of the build, and a slight turn of a strip is enough for a frame to be thicker on one side than on the other.
The J1N was created as a long-range escort fighter, but in practice it proved itself first as a reconnaissance machine and finally as a night fighter of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The Allies gave it the name Irving. It became famous for its obliquely mounted cannon armament, with which it attacked American bombers outside their defensive fields of fire. It is on a night fighter in particular that it pays to give the cockpit time, because the interior is clearly visible through clean glass.
Degrease the clear part before work and look it over against the light. Tap the mask into every corner with a toothpick, so that no pocket of air is left under it. Spray the frames first with the interior shade and after it has dried move on to the outer camouflage; the transition then looks the same as on the real aircraft.
