1:72 Nakajima Ki-27 Nate Control Surfaces is a masking set whose sprayed shadow gives the control surfaces and flaps of a model of the Japanese fighter a three-dimensional look.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set serves to spray a fine shadow along the outline of the moving surfaces. The result is the impression that the control surfaces and flaps are separate from the flying surface and slightly offset. The effect exists only in the paint; nothing happens to the part mechanically. The set is cut for 1:72 scale.
The Nakajima Ki-27 was a fighter of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force with fixed, non-retractable landing gear and, depending on the version, an open or an enclosed canopy. The Allies used the code name Nate for it. In line with the practice of the period its control surfaces were fabric-covered, so the ribs of the framework are visible on them.
It is precisely on types with fabric covering that the effect works particularly well, because the sprayed shadow combines with the relief of the ribs and the surface gains depth. Work patiently: lower pressure, thin coats and a shade only a step darker than the surrounding finish. Watch the symmetry; on the left and the right half the shadow should have the same width and the same intensity, otherwise the model looks crooked.
