The Northrop P-61 Black Widow was an American twin-engine night fighter with a twin-boom design and tail booms. In the nose it carried an onboard radar, and the crew consisted of a pilot, a radar operator and, depending on the version, a gunner as well. The power came from Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engines. The type entered service in the final phase of the Second World War and operated in the Pacific and in Europe. Versions A and B differed in details of equipment and armament. Most machines carried a dark night finish, on which, besides the national insignia, period paintings on the forward fuselage also appeared.
A deep dark surface is the most demanding for decals, because light lettering on black easily shows through and the edges of the film are visible. Apply them onto perfectly gloss clear, therefore, let it cure properly and keep the layer thin so that no air is trapped under the film. Soak a decal only until it starts to slide on the backing; too long a soak washes the adhesive out and the decal then holds poorly. Once dry, even the whole model out with a final matte clear coat, which reliably hides the difference between film and finish.
