Photo-etched metal set for a model of the Phantom FGR.2 aircraft in 1:72 scale. Thin metal adds detail where a plastic part is necessarily thicker than the real thing.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Phantom FGR.2 is the British form of the two-seat Phantom II jet aircraft, which in the Royal Air Force filled three roles at once, fighter, ground attack and reconnaissance, as the abbreviation in the designation recalls. The machine has markedly cranked wingtips and a tailplane angled downward, so it cannot be mistaken in silhouette. The cockpit for two men in tandem is easy to see on a model, and that is exactly why on this type it pays to work the interior out more carefully than on single-seat machines.
An etching is a thin metal fret with relief etched into it. The parts are separated from it, shaped and glued to the model. Metal holds its shape even at a thickness a plastic part cannot reach, so it suits surfaces where the thickness is noticeable at first glance. The scope of the set and which kit it is cut for are given in the manufacturer's instructions; an etching is always drawn for one particular release and may not fit on another.
Separate the part with a sharp blade on a hard surface and not by breaking it out between your fingers: thin metal would otherwise twist and is hard to straighten. Make the bends over the edge of a bender or between two blades, so that the edge is sharp along its whole length. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied on the tip of a toothpick, as cement for polystyrene will not join metal. Before painting, wash the metal, degrease it and lay a base coat under the paint, otherwise the finish jumps off the smooth surface.
A photo-etched set is supplied. The kit, paints and glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
