A fence in a small scale

In 1:72 scale more than just a vehicle fits onto a base, which is why a fence here does not cut a scene into two halves but draws a road, a yard or the edge of a plot within it. Boards with pointed tops belong to the fences around gardens and farm buildings, and in a small scale they work well also because their serrated silhouette is recognizable from several steps away from the display case.

How to use it

Run the fence in a gentle curve or in angled sections rather than in a straight line across the whole base; the eye then travels through the scene instead of stopping at the edge. A length of fence can be knocked over, propped against a tree or covered with vegetation, which at the same time solves the places where the joins between parts would show. Sink the lower edge into the terrain and dust the foot with soil, otherwise the fence looks as though it were standing on a carpet. In this scale less is more: shadows between the boards that are too strong weigh a scene down.

Painting tips

• Clean and degrease the parts before painting.
• Choose a more muted contrast than in large scales, as a small fence takes only fine differences of tone.
• Pull the gaps between the boards out with a thin wash, as a heavy coat floods them.
• Run a dry brush only over the edges and the points of the boards, where the wood lightens most.
• Choose the glue and the primer according to the material of the parts stated on the packaging.
