Four printed R-3S air-to-air guided missiles for models in 1:72 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
This Soviet infrared-guided missile was developed from an American original, an unexploded example of which reached the East after a clash over the Taiwan Strait. The designers took it apart, traced it and within a few years had a weapon of their own. It entered service in the early 1960s and was carried by a whole generation of fighters, from supersonic single-engine types to later machines for night escort.
The seeker head responded to the heat of an engine, so the shooter had to get behind his opponent. That fundamentally shaped both tactics and the look of air combat over Southeast Asia and the Middle East. The long forward control surfaces and the four rear fins with rollerons are characteristic.
Four pieces from three-dimensional printing, that is a full load for two aircraft, or a replacement for one machine plus a reserve on a trolley in a scene. The parts are printed in one piece including the stabilizing surfaces, which on injection-molded parts are usually too thick. The supports run to the less conspicuous side of the missile body, so no mark is left in the line of sight.
The thin surfaces break off easily, so leave the missiles on their supports until the moment you glue them. Painting them away from the model is more convenient: a white body, a dark band and colored rings are easier to paint in the hand than under a wing. Then fit them to the launch rails with the model turned on its back, so that you can see the seating face.
