About product

R3Y-2 Tradewind 1:72 — an Amodel plastic kit

The kit captures one of the largest turboprop flying boats ever built. In 1:72 scale it is a sizeable model that deserves a well-considered place in a display case even before you start building. Amodel is among the makers of short-run kits, so the kit does offer a subject you would otherwise have trouble finding, but reckon with a more demanding assembly: the parts usually need the sprue gates cleaning up, a dry fit and hand-tuning of the fit. The particular contents of the package, the number of parts and the marking schemes offered are given in the enclosed instructions.

The real subject

The Tradewind was an American four-engine turboprop flying boat developed for the navy in the first half of the 1950s. The R3Y-2 version differed from the basic form in a reworked nose, which hinged down and made it possible to load and unload cargo straight from the water onto the shore. Besides transport tasks, the machines were also tried in the role of a flying tanker. The service career of the type was short, because the powerplant turned out to be problematic, and the machines were withdrawn fairly soon.

Building and painting tips

With short-run kits, always start with a dry fit. Cement the fuselage halves section by section and rather reinforce the joints, because a model of this size is sensitive to twisting. Deal with internal reinforcement and any weight in the nose before you close the fuselage up. Reckon with filling and sanding the joints, as the long fuselage seams show the most on flying boats. Use a base coat before painting, which reveals any remaining scratches, and mask the clear parts. Large uniform areas are easier to spray with an airbrush, and a gloss intermediate coat is a good idea before applying the decals.

Who the model is for

  • For more experienced modelers who have experience of short-run kits.
  • For collectors of American naval flying boats.
  • For lovers of unconventional and rarely modeled subjects.
  • For builders who have room in a display case for a really large model.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
