About product

Decals 1:72 on the history of No. XV Squadron of the Royal Air Force (Xtradecal)

A decal sheet from the British brand Xtradecal in 1:72 scale put together as a cross section through the history of one particular Royal Air Force squadron. Sheets conceived this way usually combine the badges of the unit and the markings of the machines the squadron used over time, so they may take in more than one type of aircraft. Which machines and which periods the sheet covers is given by the manufacturer on the packaging, so compare it before buying with the kit you own.

The real subject

Squadron sheets proceed from the fact that British air units carried a badge of their own and distinctive fuselage codes throughout their existence. The badge of the unit tends to be placed on the vertical tail or by the cockpit, and letter codes and roundels complete it, whose shape and coloring changed over time. It is by these details that a model can be placed in time. The particular types of aircraft, units and periods that the sheet contains do not follow from the name of the product.

Use and application tips

Sheets of this kind contain a great number of small markings, badges and lettering. Trim the carrier film close to the printing so that no visible glossy frame is left once it has dried, and work with flat-jawed tweezers rather than pointed ones. Small decals have little adhesive, so leave them in the water only briefly and carry them, together with the paper backing, right up to the place of application. Before you start, lay out the placement according to the manufacturer's instructions and work from the top down. Once dry, check in sharp side light whether an air bubble is showing through anywhere.

Who the sheet is for

  • modelers interested in the history of a particular air unit
  • builders of British aviation equipment in 1:72 scale
  • those who want to place a model in a particular period
  • collectors of decal sheets

This is a decal sheet, that is an accessory for a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

Squadron sheets tend to be put together across the types a unit used. The particular machines are given by the manufacturer on the packaging, so compare them before buying with your kit.

It is not. It is only a decal sheet, that is an accessory for a kit.

Trim the carrier film close to the printing, soak only briefly and carry the decal, together with the paper backing, right up to the place of application.

On a glossy and smooth coat no air stays under the carrier film, so the decal does not silver and its edge is almost imperceptible.
