A plastic kit of the Soviet 120 mm mortar together with crew figures, in 1:72 scale from Zvezda. It is a small assembly intended as an accessory for dioramas, tabletop games with miniatures and collections of small equipment. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The 120 mm mortar was part of the basic fire support of Soviet infantry regiments in the Second World War. It combined heavy firepower with a weight that a small crew and a simple transport cart drawn by horses or a vehicle could still handle. The weapon consists of a barrel, a bipod and a baseplate, and it breaks down into several loads for moving. That is why it appears in scenes both in a firing position and broken down for transport. The crew worked in a practiced sequence — the loader, the gunner and the ammunition handlers — which makes the mortar a rewarding subject for a figure composition where every figure has a clear task.
Separate the small parts in 1:72 scale from the sprues with cutters and clean them up with a scalpel; twisting them off breaks them easily. Dry-fit the barrel and the bipod and only then glue them, so that the weapon stands on the baseplate at the right angle. Dose the cement by capillary action and sparingly — surplus would flood the fine detail. Paint the figures separately from the weapon and glue the whole thing together only at the end. Spray the base shade with an airbrush and finish the faces and the kit with a brush. Keep the weathering restrained in this scale: one brown wash into the folds, fine dry rubs on the edges and a little dust pigment on the boots and on the baseplate are plenty.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
