Exhausts for the Spitfire Mk.V, 1:72 scale, from Aires/Quickboost. A replacement for the Merlin exhaust stubs, which on a model of this scale never come out of a mold the way they should.
Responsibility details are not available.
The exhausts project from the sides of the engine cowling and are among the most conspicuous details of the Spitfire altogether. Injection-molded plastic, though, always makes them with a solid, blanked-off end – a mold cannot reach into so narrow a tube. This accessory from Aires/Quickboost replaces them with parts with a properly worked-out mouth, so that once fitted the cowling finally looks the way it does on the real machine.
The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.V came about as a quick answer to the appearance of new German fighters and combined the proven airframe of the previous version with the more capable Rolls-Royce Merlin 45 engine. It served in huge numbers, from the fighting over the Channel through Malta to North Africa, and existed in forms with differently shaped wingtips. The exhaust gases were led away by stubs angled back, which at the same time added a not inconsiderable thrust effect to the speed of the aircraft.
Fit the exhausts only once the camouflage and the varnish are finished, otherwise you will have to mask them laboriously. Begin the painting with a dark rusty brown base, add a dry coat of grayish ash over it and finally darken the mouths a little. Fix them with super glue and take care that all the stubs point the same way and sit at the same angle to the fuselage – the eye spots any asymmetry at once.
