Cut stencils for the hard-edged three-color finish of the Su-35 Flanker-E fighter. Worked out for models in 1:72 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Su-35 is the most fully developed branch of the Su-27 family. It received a strengthened structure, new onboard equipment and above all engines with a vectoring nozzle, thanks to which it manages maneuvers that elsewhere end in a loss of control. The type became famous at air shows, where its displays belong among the most demanding things that can be done with a heavy machine. That is also where the modelers' interest in its finish comes from.
The hard-edged scheme is made up of sharply bounded polygons in three gray tones. It is exactly this kind of drawing that is hardest to achieve by hand, because every corner has to stay sharp and the width of a band must not change. The film on the sheet contains the boundaries for the upper and the side surfaces and is cut so that the individual sections follow on across the edge of the wing and across the curves of the fuselage. In the small 1:72 scale that means the difference between a convincing machine and a smeared patch.
The proven procedure starts with the lightest tone over the whole surface. Then come the stencils and further layers toward the darkest. Because the areas are small at this scale, spray at lower pressure and from a shorter distance, otherwise the edge gets blown out.
The remnants of the sheet come in handy for covering the nozzles and the air intakes.
Keep the sheet flat; a crease in the adhesive layer shows up on the model as a faint groove in the transition.
