The Short Sunderland was a four-engine seaplane with a boat-shaped hull that could stay over the Atlantic for long hours. Crews patrolled over convoys with it, searched for submarines and rescued survivors. The number of defensive machine guns earned it the nickname Flying Porcupine. The Mk I version was the first production form of the type and carried the markings this set deals with.
The package holds a glazing mask for the outer side and no fewer than three national insignia masks. Across this whole line of masks in this size it is the highest stated number of insignia masks. The reason is simple: a seaplane has an enormous wing area and carries markings above, below and on the sides of the fuselage. Anyone building this type gets the most film precisely because the subject is large even when reduced.
The hull of a flying boat has many rounded areas onto which a large marking cannot be laid flat. Notch the film where it starts to wrinkle and press the folded edges down with a blunt tool. Choose a matte paint and apply it in three light passes, letting the surface set between them.
