What the set is intended for

A masking set simplifies the most delicate part of painting, that is, separating the areas that are to stay clear or in a different shade. The templates are cut to the shape of the parts of the Spitfire Mk.XIVc model in 1:72 scale, so slow measuring and cutting of tape directly on the model falls away, as does the risk of a blade digging into the plastic. The edges of the painted frames come out straight and sharp, which tells more in a small scale than in a large one. On aircraft models it is above all the canopy glazing that is masked, and on some sets the wheels or other areas as well; what exactly this set covers is stated by the manufacturer on the packaging.

The real subject

The Spitfire Mk.XIV is among the late versions of the British fighter of the Second World War. Compared with the older machines with a Merlin engine it was given the more powerful Griffon V12, which made the nose longer and more bulged and brought a five-blade propeller. The letter c in the designation refers to the rendering of the wing.

How to apply the masks

The masks are always applied before spraying, onto a finished, dry surface. First wash and degrease the part, so that the adhesive holds reliably. Lift the template off the sheet with tweezers, lay it in place and press it down, especially carefully around the perimeter, where paint could creep under. Spray in thin coats; a heavy coat will create a step at the edge. Take the mask off as soon as the paint has flashed off, not once it has fully cured, when it comes away less easily.
