About product

1:72 Spitfire, late E wing - Hispano 20 mm and .50 caliber Browning (MASTER)

This set by the Polish brand MASTER brings turned metal barrels for the late version of the E wing: Hispano 20 mm cannons and .50 caliber (12.7 mm) heavy Browning machine guns, both with fairings at the root. The package offers two versions of the parts, so during the build you pick the one that matches your model. It is a detail accessory, not an aircraft kit.

What sets the E wing apart

The E wing rearranged the armament of the Spitfire: the Hispano cannon moved to the outer position and a pair of light machine guns was replaced by a .50 caliber heavy Browning. The early and the late versions are told apart by the shape of the fairings at the root of the barrels: the early one had conical fairings, the late one rounded. Mixing the two versions up is a common mistake on Spitfires that any expert will notice on a finished model, so it is worth checking the shape of the fairing beforehand against a photograph of the particular machine.

Fitting and painting

Cut the plastic barrels off at the leading edge and redrill the holes to the diameter of the pins. Watch that the cannon and the machine gun have different diameters and lengths: the parts cannot be interchanged, but in a hurry it is easy to put one into the wrong hole. Glue with a tiny drop of cyanoacrylate and check the axis looking from the front, not from above. Degrease the metal before painting and use a primer for metal; spray the fairings in the color of the wing and leave the gun muzzles bare metal or weather them dark.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of late Spitfires in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who want faithful hollow muzzles on the cannon and the machine gun
  • Those who build from photographic documentation of a particular machine
  • Anyone interested in two versions of the parts in one package

This is an accessory for a model, not a standalone kit. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The early and the late E wing differ in the shape of the fairings at the root of the barrels: the early one has conical fairings, the late one rounded. This set is intended for the late, rounded version.

The set offers two variants of the parts, so you pick the one that matches your model. Keep the unused variant in reserve.

It is not. It is a metal detail accessory for a model you already own. The kit has to be bought separately.

A small drop of cyanoacrylate into a drilled hole. Cement for plastic does not hold on metal and the barrel would come loose later.
