About product

Spitfire Mk.VIII and Mk.IXc 1:72 - Hispano 20 mm cannons in fairings (MASTER)

A set of turned metal barrels for the 20 mm Hispano cannons, including the aerodynamic fairings, tailored for Supermarine Spitfire models in the Mk.VIII and Mk.IXc versions in 1:72 scale. This is not an aircraft model but a set of metal replacement parts for the armament. The manufacturer is the Polish brand MASTER, which specializes in turned metal accessories.

The real subject

Later Spitfire versions carried mixed armament in the wing, and its most conspicuous part was the pair of 20 mm Hispano cannons. The barrels projected ahead of the leading edge and elongated aerodynamic fairings covered them where they met the wing. That pair of shapes, a long slim barrel and a smooth fairing, is the hardest detail to get right on a 1:72 model. The plastic part is usually thickened for the sake of the mold, slightly bowed, and its muzzle is only a suggested dimple.

Fitting and painting tips

The metal barrel has a real bore, so the cannon muzzle stays open even seen close up, and the pair of barrels on the two wing halves keeps the same length and the same projection. Cut the plastic barrels off where they emerge from the wing and open the hole out to match the shank of the metal part. Before gluing, check against the light that both barrels run parallel; asymmetry shows more on a small model than a missing rivet. Bond with super glue or epoxy. If you paint the metal, degrease it and apply a primer for metal; at the muzzle it is worth leaving the metal surface bare and only darkening it with a wash, because no coat of paint will clog the fine bore.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Spitfire Mk.VIII and Mk.IXc models in 1:72 scale who want correctly open cannon muzzles.
  • Modelers bothered by bowed or asymmetrical plastic barrels.
  • Builders combining photo-etched sets and metal barrels on one model.
  • Competition modelers, where fidelity of the armament shapes is judged.

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. These are only the metal cannon barrels with their fairings, meant to replace the plastic parts on a model you already own.

The brass barrel is drilled, so the muzzle is genuinely hollow. The plastic one you would have to drill by hand, and on a 20 mm caliber in 1:72 scale the bit likes to wander off to the side.

The set is tailored for the Mk.VIII and Mk.IXc versions. For other versions it is not suitable, because the arrangement of the armament and of the fairings differs from version to version.

The surest way is to only degrease the metal and darken it with a wash or by chemical blackening. If you spray paint, lay it on thinly and working away from the muzzle, so the opening does not fill in.
