A set of pre-cut masks for the glazing of a model of the photo-reconnaissance Spitfire in 1:72 scale. The individual pieces are cut to the shape of the clear parts, so masking the frames means no more than lifting the mask off its backing, seating it and pressing it home. At a small scale that is a fundamental difference: cutting tape by hand along the narrow canopy frames tends to be slow and the result uneven, while a pre-cut mask holds the same frame width over its whole length. It is not a kit, but an accessory used on the finished model at the painting stage.
The Supermarine Spitfire PR.X was a pressurized photo-reconnaissance version of the legendary British fighter. Reconnaissance Spitfires flew unarmed, with photographic equipment and enlarged fuel tankage; the PR.X was built in small numbers only and ranks among the less usual modeling subjects. On the reconnaissance versions the cockpit glazing is laid out differently from the ordinary fighter variants, so it pays to use a mask made for this version.
First wash the clear parts in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry without wiping. Seat the mask dry with tweezers, check that it sits exactly on the engraved frames and only then press it home with a soft tool all around. On the inside of the cockpit it helps to fill the opening with a piece of foam or damp cotton wool so that no overspray gets in. Lay the paint on in thin coats, ideally in the interior shade first and then in the exterior shade. Peel the mask off shortly after it has dried, at a shallow angle.
