Stencils for the tiger scheme of the reconnaissance F/A-18D Hornet from a Marine squadron, 1:72 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The ATARS reconnaissance conversion replaced the gun armament in the nose of the two-seat Hornet with an assembly of sensors and recording equipment. Machines in this configuration flew with Marine squadrons, and one of them, the Bengals with the number 224, appeared repeatedly at meets of tiger units. For such an occasion one of the aircraft was given a striped coat that follows the pattern of a tiger's fur across the whole fuselage and the fins, and it is exactly that one that is the subject of this set.
The stripes of a tiger scheme have neither a regular spacing nor the same width, and on the real aircraft they break across the panel lines. Drawing such a pattern by hand in a small reduction almost never turns out well. A cut vinyl stencil holds the pattern where the real subject has it and keeps the same rhythm on both sides of the aircraft.
First lay the lighter of the two colors of the scheme and let it mature overnight. Then stick the stencil on, and spray the darker shade at a lower pressure and in several passes, otherwise it will flow under the edge of the vinyl. Any adhesive residue after removal will be taken off by a cotton swab lightly moistened with water.
A ceremonial coloring as a rule lasts one season on a military aircraft and pictures from various angles often disagree in the shades, because the stripes change tone according to the light falling on them. Anyone building from a single photograph should first compare it with further shots of the same machine. The stencil determines the pattern, and the choice of tone stays with the modeler.
The set consists of masks. The aircraft, varnishes and decals are obtained separately.
